Sound Strategies And Protection For Employers.

For any sized business, as soon as you bring even one employee on the payroll, there are significant risks involved. The laws and regulations governing employment in this country are staggering in their breadth. Without experience and legal knowledge, your business is always at risk of a possible lawsuit or legal violation. If you are an owner or executive of any sized company that employs a workforce, make sure you work with an attorney who understands employment law and can help protect your interests.

I am an AV Preeminent Rated* Mobile employment attorney who has been serving Southern Alabama since 1977. The majority of that time was spent as a Partner in a large law firm environment, representing major international corporations in all of their employment law needs. My clients have included IBM, Texaco, Georgia Pacific, Taco Bell and Alabama State Port Authority as well as chemical companies like Ciba-Geigy, Olin, Degussa, Stauffer Chemical, ICI, and Akzo-Nobel. I bring the benefit of that exceptional experience to every case I handle, with the added benefit of efficiency and personalized representation that comes from working with a one-lawyer firm.

I have handled employment claims in Federal Courts in Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile and Pensacola and defended employers against claims made in State Courts throughout South Alabama. For many years, I have dealt with, and defended claims before, numerous governmental agencies; for example, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s Birmingham Office in the late 70’s. In addition, my qualifications include:

  • I served as an adjunct professor teaching “Labor Law” at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
  • I have been retained by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to serve as a mediator in EEOC disputes. I do not represent the EEOC; I work as an independent mediator responsible for facilitating the resolution of Federal Charges of Discrimination.
  • I have handled employment matters for major international corporations involving agencies including OSHA, the National Labor Relations Board and the US Department of Labor.
  • Since the development of “EPLI Policies,” which provide insurance coverage for “employment practices liability” claims, I have been panel counsel and/or worked with insurers such as Chartis, Hartford, AIG, XL Group, OneBeacon Professional, and Resurgens Specialty Underwriting, Inc. (RSUI).

I bring all of the experience and knowledge that one would expect to find only in a large, multi-attorney firm. Running a one-lawyer operation, however, I can bring the benefit of this experience and knowledge to my clients at a better cost and with more personalized, detail-oriented service. Rather than a team of lawyers that you will never see, you will work with one experienced attorney who is dedicated to helping your business with all aspects of its employment law issues.

I provide preemptive planning to help employers minimize exposure, and I handle all types of employment claims for employers. I represent employers, ranging in size from small, closely-held businesses to international concerns, in all types of legal matters including drafting handbooks and policies, advising companies regarding terminations and reductions in force, facilitating employment dispute resolution, preventing and defending discrimination and Civil Rights claims, and handling matters with Federal and State agencies including Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, National Labor Relations Board, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and United States Department of Labor.

Representing Employers In Employee Relations Matters

As an employer, the best way to handle an employment dispute is to avoid it in the first place. I help Alabama employers minimize exposure to complaints, disputes and lawsuits by providing:

  • Employment contracts, arbitration agreements, severance packages and covenants not to compete
  • Best practices for employers, including hiring and firing policies, reductions in force and related matters
  • Compliance with federal, state and agency regulations, including OSHA standards and EEOC requirements
Employment Disputes

When disputes arise between employers and employees, it is important to handle them successfully and efficiently. I protect employer rights against employment claims involving:

  • Discrimination
  • Harassment
  • Civil rights violations
  • Wrongful termination
  • Unsafe working environments
  • Wage and hour claims
